5 Methods For Healing Acne Scars

by Cavyl Stewart

For some, getting rid of acne is only the first step. Next, you might find yourself dealing with healing acne scars that remain.

Not all acne scarring is permanent. Some will disappear, or at least become less noticeable, all on their own. But some scars won't go away without a little extra help.

Here are some of the most common treatments used to treat the scarring acne can leave behind.

Soft Tissue Fillers

Soft tissue fillers use injections under the skin to fill in acne scars, and make them less noticeable. Either collagen, or excess fat that has been taken from some other part of the body, can be used for the injections. In both cases, while the treatments are effective, the results are temporary. You will probably have to have another treatment in about 6 to 12 weeks.

Collagen injections will usually cost around $300 to $400 per treatment. Fat injections are a little more expensive, costing about $1,000 per treatment.

Microdermabrasion

This is an exfoliation technique in which surface skin cells are removed, and the look of acne scars is diminished. Microdermabrasion is a very fast procedure which can be performed in your dermatologist's office in less than an hour. There's also no recovery time.

You might need several treatments to get the result you want. But microdermabrasion treatments are fast, usually taking less than an hour. And there is little, if any, pain involved.

Microdermabrasion treatments cost around $200 to $300 each.

Dermabrasion

During the dermabrasion procedure, a rotating wire brush is used to remove the top layer of your skin. It also removes surface acne scars, and makes deeper acne scars less visible and noticeable.

If you have mild or moderate scarring, you should probably try other, less drastic treatments first. But, if your scarring is severe, dermabrasion might be right for you.

Dermabrasion can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $1,500.

Laser Resurfacing

With laser resurfacing, the outer layer of the skin is destroyed by a laser beam. The laser also heats the layer of skin underneath. As that layer of skin heals, new skin forms. The result is fewer, and less noticeable, scars.

Laser resurfacing can cost between $2,000 and $2,500.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels can sometimes make mild acne scarring less noticeable.

During a chemical peel, a product that contains acid will be applied to your skin. When it is removed, the dead upper layers of skin will also be lifted away.

Each chemical peel treatment will cost between $100 and $300. And you might need 3 to 6 treatments to get the desired results.

If you are looking for a way of healing acne scars, you have plenty of options. And a lot will depend on how much money you want to spend.
